Tata Tiago
The all new Tata Tiago was Tata Motors' new first product under the new IMPACT design philosophy. Ever since its launch in April 2016, the Tiago has seen consistent sales and continues to give stiff competition to its main rivals- Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Renault Kwid. The Tiago also happens to be Tata's best seller, with 40 per cent of total sales coming from the new hatchback.

But one of the main reasons for Tiago's success has been the fresh design element that the company has brought in along with the styling. With a well-designed interior and ample cabin room, the Tiago has received rave reviews from almost everyone. Under the hood, the Tiago comes with two engine options - a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and an all-new 1.05-litre Revotorq diesel engine. Both engines come mated to a 5-Speed Manual Gearbox and an optional AMT gearbox for the top end XTA variant.

Hyundai Grand i10
Hyundai finally gave a much needed facelift to the Grand i10 hatchback earlier this year. The highlight of the new gen Grand i10 is that it not only gets cosmetic changes, but also a new diesel engine. Since its launch in 2013, the Grand i10 has been Hyundai's most successful product and also a winner of the prestigious ICOTY 2014 award.

On the features front, the new Grand i10 comes loaded with comprehensive upgrades like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the heart of the Grand i10 facelift is the more powerful 1.2-litre diesel engine, which makes more power and has better performance than the previous 1.1-litre CRDi engine. Petrol engine remains the same.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The Baleno is one of the most successful and popular product to come from the Maruti Suzuki stable as it still commands a waiting period 12 weeks since its launch in 2015. While the Baleno takes on the like of Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback segment, it comes loaded with features including projector headlamps, LED DRLs, climate control and SmartPlay infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay.

Under the hood, the Baleno gets the tried and tested 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines. Moreover, Maruti Suzuki also introduced a performance oriented Baleno RS earlier this year and is one of the few sporty hatches available under the ₹ 10 lakh bracket. The Baleno RS is powered by a 1-litre three-cylinder turbocharged BoosterJet petrol motor that churns out 101 bhp of max power.

Volkswagen Polo
The VW Polo is probably the strongest contender in this list of top 5 hatchbacks. While the new gen Polo recently made its global debut, we doubt it will come to India any time soon. However, it could make an appearance at the 2018 Auto Expo. The sleek design is backed by the lean front radiator grille featuring a thin chrome strip running between the head lamps. The lower side of front bumper gets fog lamp housings placed just above the large vertical air dams. Bonnet is wide and features sharp lines.

The Polo has received a couple of revisions in its itinerary, which also includes a downsized diesel engine displacing 1498cc. The petrol version features a 1.2-litre MPI, three cylinder, in-line engine that churns out 73 bhp while the 1.5 litre, TDI, four cylinder in-line engine has an power output of 88 bhp. Transmission choice is restricted to a 5-Speed conventional gearbox. The automatic transmission has been left out in the standard Polo.

Honda Jazz 
The costliest of the lot is the new gen Honda Jazz which received a facelift back in 2015. The Jazz was, however, discontinued in 2013 due to poor sales, but the company decided to reignite the hatchback with a diesel engine this time. The vehicle also gets an all new design, which gives it a proper premium hatchback appeal. The most striking feature is at the rear, as it sports redesigned LED tail-lamps, roof-mounted spoiler and a large windscreen with chrome bar.

The 2015 Honda Jazz now comes with two engine options - a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine and a 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine. While the diesel trim comes mated to a 6-Speed manual gearbox; the petrol model gets either a 5-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission. The Jazz diesel is also claims to be the most fuel-efficient car in the segment with an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.3Kmpl.
